Haiti
Occupying the western third of the island of Hispaniola, Haiti became the world's first independent Black republic in 1804 after a successful slave revolution against France. The capital Port-au-Prince sits in a bay surrounded by mountains. Haiti has faced compounding crises — the devastating 2010 earthquake, hurricanes, and political instability — making it the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation.
