Liberia
Africa's oldest republic, Liberia was founded in 1847 by freed American slaves and has deep historical ties to the United States, reflected in its flag, place names, and English language. The capital Monrovia is named after US President James Monroe. Two devastating civil wars (1989-2003) destroyed much of the country's infrastructure, and Liberia is still rebuilding.
