Nauru
The world's smallest island nation and third-smallest country by area, Nauru is a single raised coral island in the central Pacific. Once one of the richest countries per capita due to phosphate mining, Nauru's deposits are now largely exhausted, leaving an environmental moonscape covering 80% of the island. The country has controversially hosted Australian offshore immigration detention centers as a source of revenue.
