South Sudan
The world's newest internationally recognized country, South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 after decades of civil war. The capital Juba sits on the White Nile. Despite holding significant oil reserves, civil conflict erupted again in 2013 and the country faces severe humanitarian challenges. South Sudan is home to one of the largest animal migrations in Africa in its Sudd wetlands.
