Tajikistan
The smallest Central Asian country by area, Tajikistan is over 90% mountainous, dominated by the Pamir range — the 'Roof of the World' — which includes peaks above 7,000 meters. The capital Dushanbe sits in a fertile valley. Tajikistan is the poorest former Soviet republic, heavily dependent on remittances from migrant workers in Russia and hydroelectric power from its abundant rivers.
