The northernmost country in Africa, Tunisia sits on the Mediterranean coast where the ancient civilization of Carthage once rivaled Rome. The capital Tunis lies near the ruins of Carthage and the blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Said. Tunisia sparked the Arab Spring uprisings in 2010-2011 and has navigated a complex democratic transition. The country blends Arab, Berber, and Mediterranean cultures.
